Constituye otro paso importante en el ciclo global del nitr\u00f3geno. La mayor\u00eda de la nitrificaci\u00f3n ocurre aer\u00f3bicamente (en presencia de ox\u00edgeno) y es llevado a cabo casi exclusivamente por los procariotas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hay dos etapas distintas de la nitrificaci\u00f3n que procesadas por distintos tipos de microorganismos. El primer paso es la oxidaci\u00f3n del amon\u00edaco a nitrito, realizado por los microbios conocidos como amon\u00edaco-oxidantes. \u00c9stos convierten el amon\u00edaco en nitrito a trav\u00e9s de la hidroxilamina intermedia, un proceso que requiere de dos enzimas diferentes, monooxigenasa amon\u00edaco y oxidorreductasa de hidroxilamina (v\u00e9ase la f\u00f3rmula inferior).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img title=\" \"decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/natureduca.com\/images_cienc\/ciclo_nitrogeno_ampliado4.jpg\" alt=\" \"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>El proceso genera una cantidad muy peque\u00f1a de energ\u00eda en relaci\u00f3n con muchos otros tipos de metabolismos, por lo que estos productores son muy lentos en su trabajo. Adem\u00e1s, los oxidantes de amon\u00edaco aer\u00f3bicos tambi\u00e9n son aut\u00f3trofos, y al igual que los organismos fotosint\u00e9ticos fijan el di\u00f3xido de carbono para producir carb\u00f3n org\u00e1nico, pero usando amoniaco en vez de radiaci\u00f3n luminosa como fuente de energ\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A diferencia de la fijaci\u00f3n del nitr\u00f3geno que es llevado a cabo por muchos microorganismos diferentes, la oxidaci\u00f3n de amoniaco la realizan los procariotas. No obstante, hasta hace poco se pensaba que toda la oxidaci\u00f3n del amon\u00edaco era ejercida por s\u00f3lo unos pocos tipos de bacterias de los g\u00e9neros Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, y Nitrosococcus; sin embargo, en 2005 se descubri\u00f3 una arqueobacteria que tambi\u00e9n pod\u00eda oxidar amon\u00edaco (descrito por Koenneke en 2005). Desde entonces, se han encontrado a menudo en muchos h\u00e1bitats arqueas amoniaco-oxidantes en n\u00famero superior a las t\u00edpicas bacterias oxidantes de amon\u00edaco. Las arqueas amoniaco-oxidantes se han encontrado abundantemente en los oc\u00e9anos, suelos, y superficies salinas, sugiriendo que realizan un importante papel en el ciclo del nitr\u00f3geno. Actualmente, s\u00f3lo una arquea amoniaco-oxidante consigui\u00f3&nbsp; crecer en un cultivo puro, la&nbsp;<em>Nitrosopumilus maritimus<\/em>, por lo que todav\u00eda es limitada la comprensi\u00f3n sobre su diversidad fisiol\u00f3gica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El segundo paso en la nitrificaci\u00f3n es la oxidaci\u00f3n de nitrito (NO2-) a nitrato (NO3-) (v\u00e9ase la f\u00f3rmula inferior).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img title=\" \"decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/natureduca.com\/images_cienc\/ciclo_nitrogeno_ampliado5.jpg\" alt=\" \"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Este proceso lo ejercen un grupo completamente separado de los procariotas, conocido como bacterias oxidantes de nitrito. Algunos de los g\u00e9neros implicados en la oxidaci\u00f3n de nitrito incluyen las Nitrospira, Nitrobacter, Nitrococcus y Nitrospina. De forma similar a la oxidaci\u00f3n del amon\u00edaco, la energ\u00eda generada a partir de la oxidaci\u00f3n de nitrito a nitrato es muy peque\u00f1a, y por lo tanto el rendimiento es muy escaso. De hecho, los oxidantes de amoniaco y nitrito deben procesar muchas mol\u00e9culas de uno u otro con el fin de fijar una sola mol\u00e9cula de CO2. Para que se haga una nitrificaci\u00f3n completa, deben concurrir tanto la oxidaci\u00f3n del amon\u00edaco como la oxidaci\u00f3n de nitrito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los amoniaco-oxidantes y nitrito-oxidantes se hallan omnipresentes en los ambientes aer\u00f3bicos. Han podido ser ampliamente estudiados en entornos naturales como suelos, estuarios, lagos y ambientes de alta mar. Sin embargo, los oxidantes de amoniaco y nitrito tambi\u00e9n juegan un papel muy importante en el tratamiento de aguas residuales, mediante la eliminaci\u00f3n de niveles potencialmente da\u00f1inos de amonio que podr\u00edan conducir a la contaminaci\u00f3n de las aguas receptoras. Una amplia investigaci\u00f3n se ha centrado en c\u00f3mo mantener poblaciones estables de estos importantes microorganismos en plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales.
